EN8 is a medium carbon steel — 0.36% to 0.44% carbon — that delivers roughly twice the tensile strength of mild steel. It machines cleanly, holds its dimensions under load, and responds to heat treatment in a way MS never will. EN8 conforms to BS 970 (080M40), equivalent to C40/C45 under IS 1570. If a drawing calls for C45 in flat bar form — EN8 is what you need.
One thing that catches buyers out: EN8 is supplied in different conditions — as-rolled, normalised, and hardened & tempered. Most general engineering work in Coimbatore runs on normalised. Always tell your supplier which condition you need — not just the grade. We've seen components fail heat treatment simply because the material arrived as-rolled when normalised was specified.
